ShawlPrayer Shawl Ministry

Three years ago, the Mission and Outreach committee began the Prayer Shawl Ministry. We have been able to give away over 70 shawls. We are thankful to members of the congregation who have helped us in making these wonderful shawls.

These shawls are a tangible way to reach out to our members and friends to create a sense of connection to one another and to God. There are many reasons for giving a shawl: As a comfort during a bereavement, an illness, or other difficult times. Also as a celebration of a special occasion or as a way of expressing heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

We are now giving shawls for baptisms and weddings. We need help with making these shawls and we will supply assistance and yarn as required. If anyone is able to knit or crochet a shawl, please contact a member of the Mission and Outreach committee, or call the church office.

About the Shawls

In 1998, Janet Bistow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the 1977 Womens Leadership Institute at the Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut gave birth to a ministry that has spread the world over.

Care and the love of knitting and crocheting have been combined into a prayerful comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted into every shawl. The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient. When the shawl is completed, it is offered a final ritual before being sent along its way.

Thus, the blessing is rippled from person to person, with both the giver and the receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!

A Shawl Maker's Prayer

Bless my hands as I knit today. May each

Twist of yarn guide me to create a pattern

Of love and comfort in my work

and remind me of Your ultimate protection.

Wrap me in Your spirit so that I will be

More caring towards those in need.

Grant me patience as I create this shawl.

And bless my handiwork as it travels to

Bring comfort and peace to someone in

Need of Your warming embrace.

Amen
