renovation

Edgewood-Oxford will be undergoing renovations again this summer. As with last year, our intent is not just to repair our structure, but to improve it so it will continue to be viable into the future.

This summer, the efforts of the Renovation Team will be concentrating on 4 areas. A 5th item, as seen below, will be coming back to the Congregation in the fall for further discussion.

  1. 1. Window replacement

  2. 2. Repairs to brick work and stairs

  3. 3. Tower entrance

  4. 4. Ventilation

  5. 5. Stained glass

Window replacement

The contract has been awarded. The windows will be installed by Candlewood Home Improvements. We’d also like to thank Kohler Windows and Payzant Building Products for their contribution to the successful quote. Work will include the replacement of all windows in the Church Hall, Narthex and Sanctuary, including the Cross in the balcony area and the tall windows in the Chancel. Work is scheduled to begin July 26th and be finished by September 3rd when Edgewood-Oxford re-opens after our August worship services at United Memorial. This time table, of course, depends on the weather co-operating, so let’s hope for a fairly dry August.

Brick and stairs repairs

D. & M. Morash has already begun work on this project, with the repair of the Tower entry staircases. Next, they will be repointing the brick work around the windows that are to be replaced – again depending on the weather, this part of the work may be completed before installation of the windows begins. The third, and biggest, part of this project will be repointing and repairing all of the brick work on the exterior Sanctuary, Narthex and Hall walls of the Church. This work will either be done during August or will wait until September, after the window installers have finished their work.

Tower Entrance

Dan Robinson did the groundwork for this project, gathering prices and finding contractors to have the interior walls and ceiling painted, carpet installed and electrical outlets upgraded. With this work completed, and new exterior and interior lighting in place, the Tower entrance is now open and it looks great inside – and outside, thanks to the efforts of our anonymous gardener.

Ventilation

The architect is currently working on specs for this project, which will include the installation of a series of exhaust fans throughout the Church. The work is expected to take place in August.

Stained Glass Windows

There has been interest expressed by the Congregation in exploring the installation of stained-glass windows in the Sanctuary. This project is not on the Renovation Team’s summer to-do list – it’s more of a “wish list” item that is being considered for the future. Three stained-glass designers have been approached so far – one prepared a preliminary design that was viewed by Congregation members at our Annual Meeting in February, and the other two presented designs at recent meetings of the Church Board.

The tentative plan is to hold a Congregational Meeting in the fall, at which time Congregation members will get a chance to see the designs and make the decision on whether or not to proceed with stained-glass windows for the Sanctuary. This project will only go ahead if it can be funded through donations. In the meantime, the new windows being installed this summer include interior woodwork that will allow stained glass to be mounted, if the Congregation decides to go ahead with this at some point in the future.

The Renovation Team members are:

  • Sue Hawkes, Team Co-ordinator
  •  Gary MacLennan
  •  Bev and Ron Dauphinee
  •  Rev. David Hann
  •  Karen Jackson
  •  Jane Wyle
As with every large project, this has been a team effort. Special thanks go to Sue Hawkes and Ron Dauphinee for their work on this summer’s projects. Edgewood-Oxford is very fortunate to have individuals who are willing to take on such a large task. It is important that we all support the Renovation Team in this effort.

The best way to support the team is to express any questions or concerns to a team member. Ron's Email is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
